Imagine Sameera Reddy clad in a sari and blouse, trying to titillate Rahul Bose .
This is no fragment of our fantasy but a sequence from Bengali filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta’s latest movie Kaalpurush.
An art movie with many surreal sequences, Kaalpurush stars Sameera Reddy as Rahul Bose’s wife who is not in physical relationship with him because he hasn’t had any sexual urge for years. Even the two kids in the movie, that she pretends are Bose’s children, are from her relationship with another man.
However, the jig we are talking about is not by the character played by Bose’s wife.
As mentioned, Kaalpurush has many surreal sequences, featuring the same actors in different characters to draw parallels.
Likewise, there is a sequence in the movie that shows Sameera as a prostitute. The sequence shows Rahul Bose going to a brothel and choosing Sameera to sleep with. But because he gets no sexual urge he is unable to indulge in any physical act with her and rather asks her to dance for him.
Thereby begins Sameera’s titillating jig to a provocative song in the background. Mind it, the jig didn’t have Sameera showing her dance skills. Rather, she had to look deliberately clumsy and bland.
Although Sameera’s dance and titillating act did not look very arousing, it did evoke laughter from those who were watching the film (screened at Osian’s Cinefan Festival).
